The Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport welcomes the guilty verdict issued by the Protea Magistrate court in the case involving musician Molemo “Jub Jub” Maarohanye and his co-accused Themba Tshabalala for racing on a public road (Mdlalose road) and driving while under the influence of drugs. Both of them were found guilty on four counts of murder and two of attempted murder after a racing went wrong when Tshabalala lost control of his car, hitting the pavement and overturning, ploughing into a group of school-pupils walking along the road. The department hopes that this will be a lesson to all reckless road users who continue to disregard road rules. This judgement conveys the message that those who wilfully disregard the rules of the road will indeed face the full might of the law. As a result of this tragic incident the Department has since committed R5 million to upgrade the Mdlalose road to make it safer for pedestrians. The upgrade consisted of a kilometre-long pedestrian walkway on both sides of the road from the intersection at Mugabe St in Protea North up to intersection at Wild Chestnut Street in Protea Glen. It also erected guardrails so that pedestrians can only cross the road at designated spots and instituted speed calming measures on the road. The upgrade was completed in May 2012. |
