SA: Statement by the Department of Trade and Industry, on Nelson Mandela Day (17/07/2014)

South Africans and the international community will tomorrow, 18 July 2014 celebrate the International Mandela Day and devote 67 minutes to community work in an effort to change the world for the better.

In support of this day, the Department of Trade and Industry, (the dti) will  spend the day in Eersterust, Pretoria at the Child Welfare Tshwane and Thuto Lesedi Secondary School in Vosloorus, where they will be painting, cleaning,  and also donating cleaning material and clothes.

According to Minister Rob Davies,   President Jacob Zuma in his State of the Nation Address encouraged South Africans to embark on a major campaign to clean-up cities, towns, townships, villages, schools and beautify every part of the country. In addition, the dti will do a clean-up operation of Nelson Mandela Drive (from Francis Baard Street, to fountain circle) in Sunnyside.

“South Africans are encouraged to devote 67 minutes to community service, and I am hoping that the small contribution by the staff of the department will not only give hope and inspiration to the communities we will be visiting, but will also change their lives for the better,” said Davies.

He said Mandela Day is a call for action for individuals, for people everywhere to take responsibility for changing the world into a better place, one small step at a time, just as Nelson Mandela did.
