SA: Statement by the Department of Environmental Affairs, rhino poaching update (31/07/2013)

The total number of alleged poachers arrested in South Africa since the beginning of the year has increased to 147.

Since the start of 2013, a total of 536 rhino have been killed for their horns, with the Kruger National Park remaining at the forefront of the onslaught.  A total of 334 rhino have been poached in the Kruger National Park in the past seven months.  A total of 56 rhino have been poached in Limpopo, 55 in North West and 47 in KwaZulu-Natal.

Of the 147 alleged poachers and couriers arrested, 64 have been caught in the Kruger National Park. 

South Africans are urged to report incidents of poaching and tip-offs to the anonymous tip-off lines 0800 205 005, 08600 10111 or Crime-Line on 32211.
