SA: Statement by the Department of Arts and Culture, denouncing Minister Nathi Mthethwa's fake Facebook account (02/09/2014)

The Minister of Arts & Culture, Mr Nathi Mthethwa strongly condemns the existence of a false Facebook account in his name.

Minister Mthethwa was alerted by staff members about the existence of the ‘Nathi Mthethwa’ Facebook account and wishes to distance himself from its use and content.

The Facebook account profile has the picture of the Minister Mthethwa and his wife, Ms Philisiwe Mthethwa taken at their wedding last year. To date, the page has attracted over 2000 people who are registered as the Nathi Mthethwa’s friends, followers and fans.

“I do not own a Facebook account and have not given permission to anyone to use my identity on social media. In fact, I do not know the identity of the account user.

“Thus I strongly condemn the use of my stolen identity and will take appropriate steps, including legal action to have this matter investigated resolved,” said Minister Mthethwa.

The fake account has been reported to Facebook.
