SA: Statement by Alan Winde, Minister of Economic Opportunities in the Western Cape Government, on petitioning Parliament to suspend immigration regulations (01/09/2014)

Alan Winde, Minister of Economic Opportunities, today (1 September 2014) handed over a petition to Parliament to suspend the new immigration regulations.

The Constitution provides for the National Assembly and the National Council of Provinces to receive petitions, representations or submissions on grievances or issues of public concern. Petitions must be formally submitted by a Member of Parliament.

Minister Winde’s petition has been sent to the office of James Vos MP, the Shadow Minister of Tourism. Vos will officially lodge the petition with the Speaker in the National Assembly, Hon. Baleka Mbete. The procedure is that once it has been reviewed, it will be tabled in Parliament, thereafter it will be referred to the relevant Portfolio Committee or Select Committee which deals with the issues raised.

Minister Winde will be keeping close tabs on this petition to ensure that it receives Parliament’s full and immediate attention.
