SA: Region F hosts safety week at Wits

The City of Johannesburg’s Region F, Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD), and the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) together with a host of security stakeholders in the Braamfontein Precinct are committed to ensuring that students have a safe environment.

A week long safety awareness campaign which started on 12 March 2018 is currently underway at Wits in an effort to educate students both new and old, about safety precaution measures that should be undertaken on and off campus.

Political Head for Region F, Cllr Reuben Masango explains that through this campaign we want to sensitize students about various safety spaces and places provided in Braamfontein”

“It is of paramount importance for us as a City to build and maintain relationships with sustainable partners to promote safety and security for students, business owners and residents in the Braamfontein precinct”

The week long safety campaign aims to make students aware of the basics of safety measures, the dangers associated with excessive drug and alcohol abuse. The stakeholders also want students to know how to identify gender based violence, report the dangers and what to do if or when they spotted them.

Through this campaign, the City and its stakeholders have also been demonstrating various self-defense techniques and providing basic first aid training to assist those that may be injured.

The campaign will culminate in safety games to reinforce safety procedures, precautions and accident prevention.
