SA: Public to scrutinise shortlist of SABC Board candidates

Shortlisted candidates to be interviewed for the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) board will be subjected to thorough public scrutiny and qualifications verification by Parliament, in order to get the best qualified people for the job.

The Portfolio Committee on Communications today met to outline the process to be followed to shortlist candidates for interviews from the list of 363 nominations.

“The public will be given five working days to comment on the list of shortlisted candidates. We are going to be guided by the Broadcasting Act. We must leave no legal holes and want the best of best to come and serve on the SABC board”, said Committee Chairperson

The names and CVs of shortlisted candidates will be uploaded on Parliament’s website for the public to comment.

Only thirty-six candidates (three candidates per post for the 12 vacant positions) will be interviewed from the received nominations on dates still to be decided by the Portfolio Committee.

”If Parliament rises before we conclude, we are going to ask the Speaker to continue working during recess. There must be no delay caused by us in this process. We don’t want a gap, by the end of the interim board’s term the new board must be ready to take over,” Mr Maxegwana said.
