SA: President Zuma determines commencement date for Geomatics Profession Act

President Jacob Zuma has, in terms of section 40 of the Geomatics Professions Act, 2013 (Act No. 19 of 2013), determined 01 August 2015 as the date on which the said Act shall come into operation.

President Zuma assented to the Act in December 2013.

The Act aims to, amongst others, provide for the transformation of the Geomatics Profession and for the establishment of the South African Geomatics Council as a juristic person as well as facilitation of access to the Geomatics Profession.

The Act also provides the different categories of registered persons and branches in the Geomatics Profession and identification of area of work to be performed by the different categories of registered persons as well as recognition of certain voluntary associations by the Council.

The Geomatics Professions Act further provides measures designed to protect the public from unethical Geomatics practices in order to maintain a high standard of professional conduct and integrity as well as the establishment of disciplinary mechanism and of an Appeal Board.

The Department of Rural Development and Land Reform is responsible for the implementation and administration of the Geomatics Profession Act.
