The lead story of the Mail & Guardian newspaper today, 28 August 2015, which states that President Jacob Zuma “apologised’’ to former Eskom CEO Mr Tshediso Matona and incoming Secretary for National Planning in the Department of Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation is incorrect and misleading.

The newspaper, relying on faceless sources, claims that the President apologised to Mr Matona for his suspension at Eskom.

The President does not run state owned enterprises. The enterprises report to line function departments. All career incidents of officials and executives in these departments are managed by the Boards and/or the Ministers responsible. The President therefore cannot apologise for the suspension or any unpleasant career incident of any government official or executive.
