Gauteng MEC for Roads and Transport, Ismail Vadi, today conducted oversight visits of construction projects along the R511 (William Nicol Drive).

The projects included the R511 and R114 (Old Krugersdorp Road), including the Mnandi/Olifantsfontein intersection following numerous safety concerns registered by road users.

The R511 links Gauteng with the North West Province and serves as a major inter-provincial route from Midrand towards the neighbouring province. It also serves as a collector and distributor of traffic for rural areas and towns.

The MEC was joined by Departmental teams from traffic engineering and maintenance units.

Upon inspection the roads the team identified a number of interventions to be undertaken in order to improve motorists’ safety, particularly where road construction is currently underway.

Some of the interventions to be undertaken in the next few days include replacement of stop sign on the N14 off-ramp; repainting of the road markings on the R114; closing off the illegal access from the R114; installating and repairing of guardrails as well as getting assistance from the Department of Community Safety to increase traffic law enforcement.

On the Mnandi/Olifantsfontein intersection the following measures will be implemented:
