The Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Labour, Ms Lumka Yengeni, has called on farmworkers in Mpumalanga to make the most of the Committee’s visit to the province on the weekend.

The Committee is scheduled to host the last round of its visits to provinces where it solicits public’s input into how best the national minimum wage could be implemented in the country, as per President Jacob Zuma’s call in 2014 that viability of a single national minimum wage be investigated.

“The Committee is looking forward to the valuable interaction with the people and welcomes the diverse nature of the input. Whatever decision is arrived at on the national minimum wage, the input from South Africans will be taken into consideration,” Ms Yengeni said.

She said labour unions should mobilise farmwokers as they have been doing in the past eight other provinces.
The Committee will then finalise the workshops with labour federations, and employer associations on the matter before a report is prepared for Parliament.
