Education activist Hendrick Makaneta called on the University of Pretoria to immediately distance itself from student residences that accommodate only white students.

Makaneta said student residences such as Sonop and De Goede Hoop exclude black students in the name of culture yet they are part of every activity meant for students in the affairs of the university.

“We are aware that these residences are allowed to fully participate in various activities within the university. The University of Pretoria should distance itself from such residences until such time that they allow black students in their rooms” Makaneta said.

“It cannot be correct that twenty three years into democracy, we still have residences that are reserved for only white students in South Africa.” Makaneta added.

 said that his organization would urgently meet with the UP management to discuss a wide range of issues including student accommodation.
