The Portfolio Committee on Health welcomes a new study, known as HVTN 702, that will involve more than 5 400 men and women aged 18 to 35 years in 15 research sites around South Africa over four years.

The vaccine trial, launched on the eve of World Aids Day (1 December), is said to be one of the biggest HIV/Aids clinical trials ever undertaken.

Acting Chairperson of the Committee Mr Fish Mahlalela said: “We are looking forward to the study with the hope that it will assist in the eradication of HIV and Aids.”

Mr Mahlalela said it is important for the trial participants to continue using existing methods for the prevention of HIV/Aids. This will be emphasised during the course of the trial.
