On Wednesday, the 13th of December 2017 the Department of Infrastructure handed over a new high tech administration building at the Mary Moodley Child and Youth Care Centre to the Department of Social Development.

MEC Jacob Mamabolo was accompanied by his counterpart MEC Ms Nandi Mayathula-Khoza who received the new facility on behalf of her department. Councillors from the Ekurhuleni Metro were also present. The facility is located in the City of Ekurhuleni Municipality Apex, Benoni.

Its features include shared office space, roof insulation and orientation, energy saving lighting, green efficiency methods, filtered natural daylight, acoustic design, network data points, and an uninterrupted Power Supply system. It also incorporates water saving and various types of landscaping.

The project entailed consolidation of various administrative offices into a single facility which provides all required amenities, including office accommodation, conferencing, meeting rooms and other support services. MEC Mamabolo said the investment of the building was worth more than R14 million.

“This building is an investment for the community of Ekurhuleni, and will help vulnerable and poor people to access quality service when they come to the center. We also encourage the management of the youth centre to take care of the building and also protect it from the hooligans that destroy public properties”, said MEC Mamabolo.

MEC Mayathula-Khoza thanked her counterpart and his officials for delivering a high quality project. She said this was one of the best facilities that her department had ever received and was also a befitting tribute to the late Mary Moodley after whom the centre is named.

Mary Moodley was the South Africa’s longest serving politically banished activist who was restricted to her home for twenty years. She was also a community development worker who protected vulnerable children in her locality.

The implementation of the project also created job opportunities for local people and emerging enterprises, without compromising standards and skills.
