SA: Committee sends condolences to bereaved families of Wits students

The Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Higher Education and Training, Ms Yvonne Phosa, has sent her condolences to the families and colleagues of the University of the Witwatersrand students who were involved in a fatal taxi accident over the weekend.
“Our sympathy, prayers and thoughts go to the families, friends and Wits University management during this dark hour. We hope and believe that fond memories of their loved ones will bring comfort during this difficult time of loss,” Ms Phosa said.

“The Committee sympathises with the injured and wishes them a speedy recovery. Road accidents continue to rob this country of its future and bright minds. This is unfortunate and should not be happening in our country. May their souls rest in peace,” she said.
Eight people, seven of whom were students, were killed when a taxi struck the trailer of an overturned truck. The students were returning to Johannesburg from a Zion Christian Church (ZCC) pilgrimage near Polokwane.

Ms Phosa called on the university and society as a whole to support the families of the deceased, and ensure that assistance is given to the injured students so that their academic performance is not affected.
