Activities scheduled on the Parliamentary programme for January includes a Rules Dialogue, training of Members and meetings of various Committees.

The Rules Dialogue which was initially planned for Friday, January 26, in Johannesburg, has been postponed to Monday, 29 January. The Dialogue, hosted by the Secretaries to the National Assembly (NA) and the National Council of Provinces (NCOP), is a follow up to the one held in Parliament in November with key stakeholders, political commentators and the media.

The usual empowerment programme for members of the NA which was scheduled for the 23-26 January has been postponed with a new date to be set at a later stage. Delegates to the NCOP will undergo their training as scheduled on 30 to 31 January 2018.

The work of Committees will continue this week with the Portfolio Committee on Public Enterprises scheduled to continue with its inquiry into the mismanagement of funds at Eskom – one of the state-owned enterprises. The Committee will hear evidence from suspended Eskom Chief Finance Officer, Mr Anoj Singh, and former acting chief executive, Mr Matshela Koko.

A joint meeting of the Standing Committee on Finance, the Standing Committee on Public Accounts and the Portfolio Committee on Public Service and Administration, is scheduled for 30-31 January to deal with the Steinhoff corporate corruption.

The National Assembly Rules Review Sub-committee is meeting on Wednesday, 24 January, to continue developing rules and procedures for the implementation of Section 89 (1) of the Constitution that deals with the impeachment of a sitting President, in line with the judgment of the Constitutional Court. The committee is expected to finalise these provisions and submit them for the approval of the Rules Committee of the NA before the end of February.

Amongst the key parliamentary activities taking place during this quarter (which ends in March) are the State of the Nation Address, the Budget Speech and the National Council of Provinces' midterm review.
