SA: Chikapa will remain a legend of SA music

The Portfolio Committee on Arts and Culture is saddened by the untimely passing of legendary musician Raymond Chikapa “Ray” Phiri.

“South Africa has lost a musical icon, a patriot and someone who contributed immensely to the attainment of democracy in the country,” said Ms Xoliswa Tom, the Chairperson of the Committee.

Mr Phiri and many musicians of his era used music to fight the devastating apartheid regime. Many of his songs, including Singajindi Majita, Whispers in the Deep and Phinda Mzala were subsequently banned by the regime.

“While we hurt because death will always be painful, we are comforted by the fact that his legacy will live on through his music and through the democracy we enjoy today as a result of his contribution to the struggle,” Ms Tom emphasised.

The Committee wishes the Phiri family strength through this difficult time. “May his soul rest in perfect peace,” Ms Tom concluded.
