The Chamber of Mines is deeply shocked and saddened by the violent deaths of six Modikwa mine employees who were burnt to death when the bus they were travelling in on the night of Monday 2 April was set alight in a village near Burgersfort, Limpopo.

These events are particularly shocking given the gruesome and merciless nature of this attack on innocent people who were making their way to work to provide for their families. The level of brutality of this attack is inconceivable and the impact of this act of violence will be felt for many years to come, not only by those who survived the incident, but also by those left behind.

The Chamber wishes a speedy recovery to those who were injured during the incident and offers its deepest condolences to the family members, friends and colleagues of the victims, and hopes that the perpetrators of this act of violence will be apprehended soon and face the full force of the law as such acts of criminality cannot be tolerated in a free and just society.
