Public Protector Thuli Madonsela cleans Mamelodi SOS Village during Mandela Day

18th July 2014

Public Protector Adv. Thuli Madonsela will on Friday lead a team of officials from her office to the SOS Village in Mamelodi outside Pretoria, where they will take part in Mandela Day activities.

The village is home to dozens of orphaned and abandoned children, whose ages range from two to late teens.

With the assistance of Woodlands Builders' Warehouse, the Public Protector team will clean, paint and do gardening at one of the 15 houses in the village. The rest of the houses have been allocated to other corporates.

"We are honouring Madiba's legacy of selfless service to humanity and responding to President Zuma's call to cleaning up the country," said the Public Protector. "We are also using this as a symbolic gesture to say while we are cleaning up on the outside, the greater call is to clean up everything, particularly our governance systems."

She added that the success of the National Development Plan depended on, among other things, all South Africans joining hands to clean up governance systems, with a view to ending maladministration.

The event will take place as follows:

Venue: Mamelodi SOS Village
Time: 13h00
Date: Friday, 18 July 2014
