The Treatment Action Campaign is a Human Rights Organization that advocates for the rights of people living with HIV/AIDS, it also values women’s rights as human rights and educate the community on HIV/AIDS, TB and Gender Based Violence through our Prevention and Treatment Literacy and Community Health Advocacy Programmes.

In the last couple of months we had number of new mothers coming to our offices to complain about the structure that is at use at Michael Mapongwana Day Hospital. Some of these women have decided to move to another day hospital or clinic because they lost hope that the problem of the structure will ever be resolved. Lastly the closing of the pharmacy while patients are still at the clinic without valid reasons also contributes to the lack of faith in the service provision at Macheal Maphongwana clinic.
There are numerous sections of the Batho Pele Principles which are not being adhered to by health workers at public health facilities. These include patients’ rights to be treated with dignity and courtesy as well as to be free from physical violence and discrimination when receiving care. The following parts of these charters are frequently violated:
- The right to patient-provider confidentiality;
- The right to receive timely health care, appropriate medical treatment, advice and medication;
- The right to demand accountability for poor service provision through recognized complaints procedures.
We are call upon the Micheal Maphongwana Community Health Centre to comply with the Batho Pele principle, which require public servants to be polite, open and transparent and to deliver good service to the public. This is the reason why we (TAC) decided to protest and demand that these appalling conditions must be addressed or plan must be put in place to revamp the structure in order for new mothers with their new babies consult health practitioners in a decent site.
