Parliament fracas lands EFF MPs with 5-day suspension

The National Assembly on Wednesday suspended the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) from Parliament for five working days.

"In terms of the Rule 53A (A), you are automatically suspended for the period applicable, as provided for Rule 54," National Assembly speaker, Baleka Mbete, said in a letter to the party.

"You may not enter the precincts of Parliament for the duration of your suspension," it read.

Rule 54 states that the suspension of a member would be for five parliamentary working days on the first occasion during a session.

This follows an incident that led to the EFF members of Parliament being forcibly removed from the National Assembly during the president's budget vote.

The party had tried to bring a motion saying President Zuma has no place in the Parliament.
