Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister Aziz Pahad will depart for a tour
of the Middle East and Cuba tomorrow, the foreign affairs
department said yesterday.
Spokesperson Ronnie Mamoepa said that Pahad would lead a delegation
to Lebanon, Syria, Egypt, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Kuwait
City.
He said issues like the so-called "road-map" for peace in Palestine
and Israel would come under the spotlight during the visit to the
region.
"Without commitment from both the Israelis and Palestinians to
comply with the obligations as outlined in the road map, peace in
the region will remain elusive," he said.
Pahad would also discuss the recent outbreaks of suicide bombings
and thereafter would lead the delegation to a meeting with Cuba's
foreign ministry in Havana on June 3.
At this meeting South Africa and Cuba would review their political
bilateral relations, the African Union, and Nepad.
The revitalisation of the Non-Aligned Movement (Nam) would also
feature high on the agenda.
South Africa and Cuba, together with Malaysia, are members of the
Nam Troika that represents the past, present and incoming chairs of
the multinational body.
"Both countries firmly support the strengthening of Nam as a
vehicle that developing member countries could use to establish
critical consensus around fundamental issues such as poverty
alleviation, debt reduction and sustainable development," he
said.
