An event marking the opening of the Ahmed Kathrada Site of Remembrance will be held on Sunday, 20 August at the Westpark Cemetery in Johannesburg.

The site, which is symbolic of an open Robben Island cell, will be situated at Kathrada's grave.

The site opening forms part of the national programme of tributes launched last month in Kathrada's hometown, Schweizer Reneke.

Kathrada, who would have been turning 88 years on Monday, will be honoured by various tributes at the event, celebrating the various aspects of his life, which range from politics, youth activism and friendships.
