The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) deputy president Joseph Montisetsi will meet the alliance partners today at Nelspruit in Mpumalanga. They will meet at the Nehawu Provincial offices at 9:30. The objective of the meeting is to lobby the alliance partners in the province to rally behind the program to rescue the three mineworkers who are still trapped underground at Lily Gold Mine. The alliance meeting today is also to prepare for the meeting the workers and community at large on 12th of June 2016. The NUM President Piet Matosa will address the meeting.

Solomon Nyerende,  Yvonne Mnisi and Pretty Nkambule remain trapped underground after a container plunged into a massive hole on the 5th February 2016.

The NUM demands that those poor workers still trapped underground be brought to the surface as soon as possible. The thoughts of having them deep underground are highly unbearable.

The NUM will fight tooth and nail to make sure that those trapped workers are rescued dead or alive so that their families can find closure.

There is a safety crisis in the mining industry in South Africa. The workers have a right to refuse unsafe work. Mineworkers should be industry leaders in creating a safety culture. but are doing far too little to prevent fatal accidents and injuries in the mining industry in South Africa.
