The final report of the Marikana Commission of Inquiry is scheduled to be delivered to the President today. NUM looks forward to the report being made available to the parties and the public as soon as possible so that the final chapter on the events at Marikana in August 2012 can be closed.

It is our expectation that the final report will go a long way in assisting the people of Marikana, the workers in the platinum sector, their families, and South Africans generally to know exactly what happened over the course of that week so that they can begin the process of healing.

We hope that the report will serve as the catalyst for the creation of stabilised worker communities, proper industrial relations practices, the radical improvement of the working and living conditions of mineworkers, and the recognition of the tireless and unforgiving work done by mineworkers for the betterment of the country and our society.

“We hope that lessons will be learnt and the same mistakes will not be repeated for the sake of our common good as we chart the way towards a successful, sustainable mining industry and a prosperous South Africa whose resources will be geared towards serving the interests of all South Africans, particularly the workers” says General Secretary , Frans Baleni .
