NPA not captured by anyone - Shaun Abrahams

NPA head Shaun Abrahams

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) is not captured by anyone, Shaun Abrahams told Parliament on Friday.

Abrahams was briefing the portfolio committee on justice and correctional services on his decision to drop the fraud charges against Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan.

An emotional Abrahams took the committee through the decisions to prosecute and subsequently drop the charges, saying he had exercised his prerogative as the head of the NPA.

"We will continue to exercise our functions without fear, favour or prejudice, irrespective of station in life of any person and entity," he told the committee.

"We will continue to uphold the independence and impartiality of the office."

He told the committee he was aware of calls for him to be disbarred, which had come from the Economic Freedom Fighters as well as the ANC's Mathews Phosa.

He again reiterated that the charges had been dropped after representations by the two former South African Revenue Service senior officials who had also been accused in the matter, Oupa Magashula and Ivan Pillay.
