North West premier Mahumapelo yet to resign, supporters gather in Mahikeng

North West Premier Supra Mahumapelo

Supporters of North West premier Supra Mahumapelo gathered in Mahikeng on Wednesday, chanting "No Supra, no election".

Mahumapelo was due to announce his resignation at a media briefing on Wednesday morning, but it was postponed due to "new development", North West provincial government spokesperson Brian Setswambung said.

An urgent meeting of the African National Congress' Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) was convened at Embassy House in Mahikeng, where according to reports, PEC members refused to accept Mahumapelo's resignation.

This was in contrast to a statement by acting provincial secretary Sussana Dantjie, who is also the Speaker of the North West legislature, issued on Tuesday night welcoming Mahumapelo's voluntarily exit as the premier of the North West.

Mahumapelo had been under pressure to resign, following violent protests that erupted in North West on April 18.
