North West: North West Local Government and Human Settlements on allocation of housing projects

The Department of Local Government and Human Settlements in Bokone Bophirima is serious about breaking down monopoly in the housing construction industry by ensuring a fair allocation of housing units.

Through the ‘bietjie-bietjie maak meer (bit by bit) approach, at least three housing developers have been allocated 200 housing units, respectively, to be spread across the villages in Moretele local municipality which is 100 percent rural. The entire project is worth over R25 million and should be completed before end of January 2018.

In the 2017/2018 Budget Speech, the MEC for Local Government and Human Settlements in Bokone Bophirima, Galaletsang Gaolaolwe, announced the introduction of the new human settlements delivery approach called the bietjie-bietjie maak meer approach whose main intention to ensure the is equal and fair allocation of housing units to especially to small contractors.

“The approach will further increase the pool of participants in the construction of low cost houses and further break the monopoly of big companies in the construction industry of low cost houses. This approach will also ensure that we are able to service all communities in the province, especially in villages, townships and small dorpies’’, she said.
