The Energy Regulator at its meeting held on 30 March 2017, approved that Port Elizabeth Solar PV1 (Pty) Ltd be issued with a licence to operate a 5MW generation solar photovoltaic (PV) farm in Coega Industrial Development Zone, Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, Eastern Cape Province. Port Elizabeth Solar PV1 (Pty) Ltd is 100% owned by Clean Energy Africa (Pty) Ltd.

On 24 October 2016, the National Energy Regulator (NERSA) received an application for a generation licence from Port Elizabeth Solar PV1 (Pty) Ltd. However, the applicant did not submit all of the required information, hence NERSA started processing the application on 11 January 2017, when all required information had been provided. The application was for a licence to operate a 5MW installed generation solar PV farm (with a contracted capacity of 5MW) in Coega Industrial Development Zone.

The generated electricity will be sold to a renewable energy trader, PowerX (Pty) Ltd (‘PowerX’). PowerX has a trading licence issued by NERSA for trading in green energy within South Africa.

No objections were received by NERSA after Port Elizabeth Solar PV1 (Pty) Ltd advertised its application for a generation licence, nor after NERSA published notices for public hearings.
