NEHAWU calls for the dismissal of the Regional Manager, of Public Works Department in Mthatha, Ms Nomzingisi Tukela, for a litany of failures and violations, following the deterioration and near collapse of the department in Umthatha. The union is deeply worried that since her appointment as the Chief Director in 2008 at the Umthatha Regional Office, Ms Nomzingisi Tukela has presided over falling standards and has abused her powers and violated the proper Supply Chain Policy.

Workers want her qualifications and experience investigated and also wants answers regarding the processes followed during her employment. The region that was previously rated amongst the top three {3} top performing regions with 98% expenditure in the entire national department has since collapsed.

Proper procurement processes are not followed and she puts pressure and gives verbal instructions for some of the service providers to be given advance payment within 7 days of their appointment. During the financial year 2010/2011, she gave an instruction for the advance payment of the following service providers; Amatola water, Buffalo Timber and Kwikspace Modular buildings.

NEHAWU is deeply disappointed by the failure of the National department to intervene, despite receiving a series of petitions from the workers citing concerns about her abuse of power and the victimization of workers. The national department conducted an investigation but failed to present the outcomes of the investigation to the workers and their union. Both the office of the Minister and the DG has turned a blind eye to the issues raised by the workers, therefore neglecting their duties.

After patiently waiting for action from the employer the union declared a dispute with the employer on the 20th of March 2014.In June this year, the council awarded the union a certificate to embark on a strike action if the matters remain unresolved. The union has therefore decided to embark on an indefinite strike until their issues are resolved and the Regional Manager suspended or dismissed. - See more at: http://www.cosatu.org.za/show.php?ID=9375#sthash.VhlFOrx1.dpuf
