MPs shortlist 12 candidates to fill vacancies on SABC board

Parliament's portfolio committee on communications on Wednesday shortlisted 12 candidates to fill four vacancies on the beleaguered South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) board.

They are Kevin Jones,  Advocate Motshedi LekkalakalaThabo LeshiloDiliza Madikiza, Unathi Magwentshu, Vuyokazi MakhubaloMathews MofokengBernedette MuthienMegan NaidooThozama NeneMichael Nurick and Jasmina Patel.

The board has four vacancies, following the resignations of Febe Potgieter-Gqubule, Victor Rambau, Rachel Kalidass and the non-ascendance by Nomvuyiso Batyi.

The African National Congress (ANC) study group in the committee said it believed the nominees had the skills to help effect the turnaround strategy for the public broadcaster, which recorded a loss of more than R600-million in the last financial year.

"We also applaud the fact that majority of the shortlisted candidates are young, half of whom are women, in line with the ANC's transformative agenda."

The candidates will be interviewed on October 30. Four of them are chartered accountants.
