Minister Des van Rooyen visits Modjadji Royal Council

The Minister for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, honourable Des van Rooyen will visit the Modjadji Traditional Authority. The purpose of this courtesy visit is to officially inform them about the recognition of the Queenship of the Balobedu tribe. This recognition restores the Modjadji Queenship, which was nullified by the apartheid government in 1972, by demoting Queen Makoma Modjadji IV to chieftaincy.

The Minister will be accompanied by the Deputy Minister responsible for Traditional Affairs, honourable Obed Bapela, Office of the Premier in Limpopo, the COGHSTA MEC, honourable Makoma Makhurupetje, as well as the Mayor of Mopani District Municipality and five Mayors of the Local Municipalities.

The Queenship of Balobedu was recognised in terms of section 2A (3) (a) of the Traditional Leadership and Governance Framework Act, 2003 (Act No. 41 of 2003) on 31 March 2016.

The political leadership will meet with the Regent Bakgoma MT Modjadji and the senior leadership of the Traditional Authority. They will later meet with headmen/women and the community members at Mokwakwaila village.
