MEDIA INVITE-MINISTER MOLEWA IN PARTNERSHIP WITH BIRDLIFE SOUTH AFRICA TO LEAD WORLD MIGRATORY BIRD DAY

13th October 2015

The Minister of Environmental Affairs, Mrs. Edna Molewa will lead the celebrations forthe World Migratory Bird on 15 October 2015, at the Marievale Bird Sanctuary in Gauteng.

The theme of the 2015 World Migratory Bird Day is “Energy– make it bird-friendly!”

This year’s celebrations aim to highlight the importance of deploying energy technologies in a way that prevents, minimises and mitigates impacts on migratory birds and their habitats.

World Migratory Bird Day (WMBD) was initiated in 2006 as a global awareness-raising campaign to highlight the need for the protection of migratory birds and their habitats.

On the second weekend of the month of May each year, people around the world take action and organise public events such as bird festivals, education programmes and bird-watching excursions to celebrate the World Migratory Bird Day. This year, South Africa will celebrate the day during the month of October, a time when birds are welcomed back from their European wintering grounds.
