Medfontein building closes due to departmental failure, DA urges investigation

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Free State notes the decision by the Department of Labour to close the Medfontein Building in the Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality following serious safety concerns. The DA urges the Department of Transport and the Department of Public Works and Infrastructure to investigate the faults that led to the closure of the Medfontein building in Bloemfontein.

The Free State Department of Transport Abnormal loads office in the Medfontein building was closed due to allegedly illegal electrical wiring that led to electricity spontaneously tripping, lights bursting and air conditioners tripping at random. Upon inspection, the wiring was found hanging outside the walls, DB boards were incorrectly installed, and light switches were hanging from the walls. Serious concerns were raised regarding employees’ ability to safely conduct their business and the building was closed until the necessary repairs could be made.

The Labour Relations Act clearly outlines the basic requirements for a safe working environment. The Department of Transport’s failure to meet its legal duty in this matter is indicative of its total failure to serve the people of the Free State. It is clear that they cannot be relied upon to provide a safe working environment, much less a safe road system.

The Department of Labour has requested an action plan from the HODs to solve this crisis and allow employees to safely return to work. The DA will continue to put pressure on the department to rectify the issues so that business can resume.
