Mashaba, Makhura agree to put differences aside

Gauteng Premier David Makhura and Johannesburg mayor Herman Mashaba have agreed to put their political differences aside and put residents first.

This was agreed at a meeting they held on Wednesday, the city said in a statement on Thursday.

Last month, the Democratic Alliance's Mashaba scrapped a three-year R70-million project to build bicycle lanes around the city which his predecessor, African National Congress mayor Parks Tau, had initiated.

Mashaba said the project would only be resumed once all roads around the city had been upgraded.

They agreed to collaborate on the inner city regeneration project, which would involve policing, transport, housing, and cleaning.

They discussed the allocation of completed houses from both the provincial and municipal government, and ways of speeding up of the issuing of title deeds.

They would attempt to integrate the city’s and province’s public transport initiatives and start a pilot project to assess the viability of extending operating hours at primary health care facilities.
