 Mahumapelo remains NWest premier

North West Premier Supra Mahumapelo

The African National Congress (ANC) Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) in the North West province said on Wednesday it has decided that North West premier Supra Mahumapelo will not resign.

"The provincial executive committee this morning took the following decision, one that comrade Supra, as the premier deployed by the ANC in government, is not going anywhere," said Zanele Mphafudi, the acting regional chairperson of Dr Kenneth Kaunda region.

The PEC was locked in a meeting in Mahikeng since the morning to discuss Mahumapelo's position.

Mphafudi said the provincial executive committee would engage the ANC National Executive Committee (NEC) on the decision the PEC had taken.

Mahumapelo announced on Tuesday that he would resign as the premier on Wednesday by midday.

But in the early hours of Wednesday, a media briefing where he was supposed to formally announce his resignation was postponed indefinitely.

Speaking to supporters, Mahumapelo said if people were to be removed from their positions on the basis of allegations, the ANC would be left without leaders.

"We can not allow a situation where [if] an allegation is made against you and immediately you must go..."
