Mahumapelo can still resign – DA

North West Premier Supra Mahumapelo

The Democratic Alliance (DA) has called on embattled North West Premier Supra Mahumapelo to “do the honourable thing” and resign before he faces a Motion of No Confidence against him on Tuesday.

In February, the Economic Freedom Fighters in the North West wrote to the Speaker of the provincial legislature Susan Dantjie following a series of allegations of corruption against Mahumapelo and several departmental heads.

The motion against the Premier will be conducted through an open ballot system after Dantjie made an announcement last week.

DA North West leader Joe McGluwa said that the North West DA will support the motion because the premier was not fit to lead the Province.

He said while Mahumapelo’s removal as Premier would not fix the province’s problems, it was a step in the right direction.

McGluwa stated that the people of North West had no faith or trust in Mahumapelo’s ability or integrity to give them the opportunities to grow, develop and break the cycle of poverty.

“Hospitals and clinics are understaffed and without resources. There are no proper patient transport systems in place,” highlighted McGluwa.

The DA in the North West said that the African National Congress (ANC) in the province was reluctant to listen to the people and this showed that the party had chosen to support Mahumapelo.

Mahumapelo’s office declined to comment on the matter, only saying that the matter was being handled by the ANC.
