Mahlobo's woes continue as DA plans to report him to Public Protector

State Security Minister David Mahlobo

The Democratic Alliance (DA) will be reporting State Security minister David Mahlobo to the Public Protector for "lying about his relationship" with student leader Mcebo Dlamini.

DA deputy chief whip Mike Waters said Mahlobo deliberately mislead Parliament and the public when he said that Dlamini had never been to his house.

Three days earlier, the minister had said on tape that Dlamini had been to his house a number of times.

"Mahlobo yesterday told a bald-faced lie in the National Assembly when responding to an oral question from DA MP Prof Belinda Bozzoli he stated that #feesmustfall student leader and criminally accused Mcebo Dlamini has never been to his home. He further suggested that the visit was not a fact and simply gleaned 'from a newspaper article'," Waters said.

It was up to the new public protector to take the minister to task for "fibbing to Parliament", Waters said.

The minister's woes continued in the National Assembly on Thursday, when opposition party MPs called him out for contradicting himself.

Economic Freedom Fighters MP Thembinkosi Rawula condemned the minister.

Nothing was going to happen to Mahlobo, however, as he was "part and parcel of a criminal syndicate", Rawula said.

He called him a minister without dignity.

"Mr Mahlobo was lifted from obscurity and given the position he owns. He is not going anywhere," the MP said.

Rawula was told he could not make such accusations without raising them as part of a substantive motion.
