Brand South Africa on Monday labelled African National Congress (ANC) struggle veteran Winnie Madikizela-Mandela a “true patriot” and acknowledged her role in helping South Africa transition peacefully from apartheid to a stable democracy.

The 81-year-old Madikizela-Mandela passed away in Johannesburg on Easter Monday, after a long illness.

Brand SA said Madikizela-Mandela’s courage to speak her truth and dedicate her life towards fulfilling a vision of an equitable, prosperous, better future for South Africa is what made her a truly powerful icon of freedom.

Brand SA CEO Dr Kingsley Makhubela expressed his sadness at her passing and stated that her legacy should be celebrated.

“Madikizela-Mandela faced untold hardships during the apartheid years, yet she confronted each with an inner strength and fortitude. It is her courage and bravery, as well as fearless commitment to fulfilling the dream of economic and political freedom which will remain her ultimate legacy,” said Brand SA.

The national reputation agency went on to say that Madikizela-Mandela’s dedication to the resistance movement meant she had to neglect many of her personal goals.

Brand SA said that as South Africa mourned the loss of a brave and courageous leader, South Africans were also celebrating her sacrifices and achievements over a lifetime of dedicated service to making the dream of a free and prosperous South Africa a reality.

Several memorial services are being held around the country to honour her life.
