Land expropriation hearings move to North West this week

Members of parliament are set to start conducting public hearings on possibly changing the Constitution to allow for land expropriation without compensation in the North West province from Tuesday.

In a statement on Monday, the joint constitutional review committee said its North West leg of the public hearings, taking place countrywide, would be held in Taung.

Earlier this year, the National Assembly and the National Council of Provinces voted to ascertain whether a review of Section 25 of the Constitution and other clauses were necessary to make it possible for the state to expropriate land in the public interest without compensation, and to propose constitutional amendments where necessary.

The public hearings form part of the review process and the constitutional review committee has split into two teams which have already held public meetings in the Limpopo, Northern Cape, Free State and Mpumalanga provinces.
