Labour hosts labour law amendments road shows, 2 to 6 Mar

The Department of Labour in partnership with the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) will host the last in a series of labour law amendments sessions designed to educate stakeholders on the implications of the amended laws. 

The roadshows are targeted at employer organisations, trade unions, academics, human resource practitioners and the public at large.

Next week roadshows will be held on (2 March) at Kat Leisure Osner Hotel Office Suites Kennaway Hotel Esplanade in East London; (3 March) at ETC Conference Centre Spondo Street at Struandale in Port Elizabeth; (5 March) at Safari Lodge Hotel & Convention Centre 1 Donkerhoek Road in Rustenburg; culminating on (6 March) at the CSIR Conference Centre in Meiring Naude Road in Pretoria.

All roadshow presentations start at 09:00 -13:00. Sessions have been held in Cape Town, Kimberley, Bloemfontein, Johannesburg, Durban, Polokwane and Mbombela.

The key labour laws that were recently reviewed, and were now in force include:

The presentations focus on the protections of vulnerable workers; broad changes in regard to temporary employment which is now limited to a period not exceeding three months; unfair discrimination and issues relating to equal pay for work of equal value; the regulation of labour brokers and, enhancement of the labour market institutions such as the CCMA and labour courts.

There is also a special presentation on the newly-developed Employment Services Act that regulates the placement of work seekers and recruitment of foreign skills.
