KZN Premier had 'reservations' about how his axing was handled

Former KZN Premier Senzo Mchunu

Axed KwaZulu-Natal Premier Senzo Mchunu had “reservations” about how his removal from the post was handled, he said on Monday.

In a discussion with African National Congress (ANC) secretary general Gwede Mantashe over the weekend, he specifically expressed concern about the role of the ANC’s head office in the decision, he said in a statement.

“I was among other things, driven by the feeling that dignity, integrity and fairness are always important in circumstances of this nature, more so where it has to do with ANC internal processes. I felt the need to clarify certain issues and contribute... after I observed what was unfolding in the media.”

Mchunu said he met ANC provincial leaders on Friday and that three issues were discussed. He said six allegations were levelled against him.

He gave no details of these. Mchunu said Mantashe explained the role of the provincial ANC, and the national executive and national working committees’ roles in the decision.

They discussed the provincial government’s reshuffle and the party’s intention to send him to the National Assembly.

Mchunu said he would co-operate with the ANC’s national working committee and respond in writing on his proposed move to Parliament.

He expressed his appreciation to the ANC and thanked all provincial legislature parties and their leaders, and King Goodwill Zwelithini.

“We made great efforts in maintaining high level performance, accountability and integrity,” he said.

The ANC had nominated Transport MEC and KwaZulu-Natal ANC deputy chairperson Willies Mchunu to become the new premier.
