KZN: MEC Mchunu welcomes arrests of 12 suspects for murder

Willies Mchunu

THE KWAZULU-NATAL MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Willies Mchunu, has welcomed the swift arrests of 12 suspects in connection with the murder of 38-year-old Jabulani Nkunzikayibekwa Nxumalo, who was assaulted and necklaced in KwaMashu by suspects that accused him of witchcraft.

Police reports indicate that on 19 July 2015 around 00: 30, Nxumalo was asleep in his shack at Qhakaza, in KwaMashu, when a group of people allegedly stormed in and dragged him out. He was allegedly assaulted by the mob which accused of practising witchcraft in the area.
Tyres were placed around his body and he was set alight.  Nxumalo died at the scene and his vehicle, which was in the yard, was also set alight.

Following police investigations, 12 suspects, aged between 18 and 30, were arrested yesterday and are expected to appear in the Ntuzuma Magistrate‘s Court soon.

Today (28 July 2015), Mchunu welcomed the arrests and commended the police for bringing the suspects to justice with speed and swiftness.

“We are, indeed, sickened and disgusted by incidents of this nature where lives are lost through allegations of witchcraft.

“We have continuously been urging community members not to take the law into their own hands but rather address their concerns and frustrations in a constructive manner.

“We therefore, welcome these arrests because it sends a loud and clear message that the police will always catch up with suspects that take the law into their own hands.

“We also call on whoever might have information in this matter to share it with the police immediately so that further arrests can be made and a conviction and sentenced can be secured,” said Mchunu.

Mchunu also extended his heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Nxumalo.
