KZN: MEC Mchunu announces gradual progress in the re-intergration of displaced foreign nationals

Willies Mchunu

The KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Willies Mchunu, has expressed satisfaction at the progress being made to re-integrate displaced foreign nationals to where they resided before the recent violent attacks.

Mchunu, who is the chairperson of the Inter-Ministerial Task Team dealing with the recent attacks on foreign nationals, today (Thursday, 21 May 2015) convened a meeting to assess the situation in the province.

In a meeting, MEC Mchunu expressed satisfaction that the process of reintegration was gradually yielding results; with more foreign nationals now back to the communities.
In a meeting a report was presented indicating that out of the 500 people remaining in Chatsworth, the figure has now dropped to 410. The decrease indicates the effectiveness of the reintegration process which has taken place in various wards in EThekwini.

Chatsworth remains the only shelter currently housing foreign nationals after two others in Phoenix and Isiphingo were closed after the successful reintegration.
“We are impressed with the process of reintegration of the displaced foreign nationals. We can now safely say as the province, we have ended the unfortunate attacks on foreign nationals. The fact that the numbers, even in Chatsworth are going down, indicates the fact that our people have opened their arms to foreign brothers and sisters. We wish to encourage other communities and their structures to participate in dialogues to ensure total reintegration.” said Mchunu.

The meeting also received a report on the challenges which are currently experienced in the Chatsworth shelter, which include issues of security and other social challenges.
MEC Mchunu reiterated government’s commitment of working hard to ensure that such unfortunate incidents do not happen again.
