JVJP: Statement by Jewish Voices for a Just Peace, South African Jewish organisation, welcomes Gaza truce and calls for a lasting peace (29/08/2014)

Jewish Voices for a Just Peace (JVJP) welcomes the truce in Palestine-Israel. We welcome the cessation of killing that has resulted in the tragic loss of lives as well as the wanton destruction of property and infrastructure and violence on civilians in Palestine-Israel. No words can explain the huge human tragedy of the loss of lives in the last 7 weeks. Almost 500 Palestenian children have been killed. 2 000 Palestenians lost their lives in Israeli attacks and the United Nations estimates that 70% of Palestenians killed are civilians. 7 Israelis civilians, one Thai national and 64 Israeli soldiers died. We mourn all the lives lost in the unnecessary bloodshed.

We call on the Israeli government to now enter into genuine and empathetic negotiations with a displaced, refugee population. In these negotiations, genuine grievances need to be addressed in order to forge a just and lasting peace in the region. We call on Palestinians to hear the fears of Israeli people even though they possess a mighty army.

We call on all of the leaders to be visionary and to heed to call of their constituents who want a new society based on human rights for all. This will result in a lasting peace.
