SACCI: Statement by Neren Rau, CEO of South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry, on the role that business has to play in rooting out corruption (01/10/2014)

The South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SACCI) supports the good work done by the Public Protector in fighting corruption and maladministration as outlined this morning by Adv. Thuli Madonsela at the SACCI Business Breakfast hosted by Webber Wentzel. SACCI takes up the challenge of Adv. Madonsela to fight corruption through better discipline and proper legal training within the Business Community. The Business Breakfast forms an important part of SACCI's engagement with government towards strengthening relations and finding proper responses to policy questions that culminates in the Annual Convention (click here for more information on the 2014 Annual Convention).

Adv. Madonsela congratulated the Business Community in supporting the work of the Public Protector. “Business is increasingly doing something to ensure good governance in both government and the business sector,” Adv. Madonsela said. She stressed that the two evils of maladministration and corruption leave in their wake devastation and retards social progress, and that there is greater effectiveness in a joint effort against corruption, rather than solo attempts. Adv. Madonsela emphasised that business has a key role to play in rooting out corruption. “More self-policing is necessary to ensure the few bad apples involved in corruption are brought to book.” Other measures include ensuring the Business Community understands the law in order to avoid actions which might unknowingly exert undue influence and in so doing bias government officials.

SACCI is proud to have been part of this important engagement and looks forward to further discussions with the Public Protector.
