The IFP in KwaZulu-Natal calls on the MEC of Education, Peggy Nkonyeni to act
swiftly and prevent attacks and threats at schools after teachers at
Ingobamakhosi in Nongoma received death threats from local community and are now
living in fear.

"This happened after the Department sent a bus to take children from eCelukwazi
High School to KwaNomatiyela High School without consulting the community.
Teachers are living in fear because some of the community members have
threatened them. This situation needs urgent intervention because it seems as
though this is a politically motivated move as these teachers are working in the
IFP stronghold while the bus comes from an ANC strong hold," said IFP
Spokesperson on Education, Mrs Thembeni kaMadlopha-Mthethwa, MPL.

"The protection of teachers and learners is paramount as no one can work or
learn whilst under threat. The South Africa government has a constitutional
obligation to provide a safe learning environment and to ensure that the
country's educational sector is not threatened by the killing and intimidation
of teachers. All role players have to take a stand to stop violence against
teachers and parents need to also take responsibility for the discipline of
their children," continued Mrs Madlopha-Mthethwa.

"When education institutions are targeted or attacked, the damage and resultant
consequences can be major and far-reaching," concluded Madlopha-Mthethwa.
