The IFP in KZN-Natal Legislature calls upon the MEC for Transport, Willies
Mchunu, to urgently consider the issue of the cost of vehicle licences. KZN
motorists have to pay a substantially higher price as compared to motorists
in other provinces.

"If costs were reduced, it would bring financial relief to already burdened
motorists. It would also serve as a means of generating revenue as many big
businesses currently choose to register their vehicles in Gauteng, Eastern
Cape and Mpumalamga," said IFP Spokesperson on Transport, Mr Steven Moodley,
MPL.

"The IFP also calls on the MEC to engage with taxi associations with a view
of introducing a taxi subsidy. As this is a common mode of transport and a
growing industry, it would be prudent for government to offer a subsidy
similar to that offered to bus companies. A positive spin- off will be a
greater sense of accountability on the part of taxi associations thereby
contributing to safety on our roads," continued Moodley.                   
                   

"On going road safety campaigns are also necessary to minimise the carnage
on our roads. It is time for government to acknowledge the cost of accidents
not only in monetary terms but also the devastating impact it has on
families of accident victims" concluded Moodley.
