The IFP in KwaZulu-Natal calls on Provincial Health MEC, Sibongiseni Dhlomo, to
launch a full-scale investigation after a patient died at Durban's Addington
Hospital after allegedly being stabbed by another patient in early hours of
today.

"The IFP is appalled by this. The incident also explains why there are so many
negligence claims against the provincial health department. KwaZulu-Natal health
can ill-afford this," said IFP Spokesperson on Health, Mrs Ncamisile Nkwanyana,
MPL.

"The IFP expects the MEC to launch an immediate enquiry into the above incident
and to ensure that swift action is taken against those responsible. Nursing
staff must account for where were they during the alleged stabbing. The MEC must
treat these incidents with the gravity they deserve," concluded Mrs Nkwanyana.

The IFP again calls on the Department of Health to install CCTV cameras in all
hospital precincts because it believes that manpower is not sufficient to
monitor the safety of patients, visitors and hospital staff.
