IFP: Call for a mass awareness campaign about Listeria

The Inkatha Freedom Party calls for a mass awareness campaign about Listeria.

“We call for a mass awereness campaign about Listeria. Public awareness campaigns on spotting the signs and symptoms of diseases and how to prevent them, play a key role in helping to stop the spread of such infections.

To help address this threat, we need to launch a public health campaign, by distributing posters, leaflets and text messages to increase knowledge and understanding of the disease.

Furthermore, street vendors are selling vetkoeks with polony and sometimes hotdogs therefore it is imperative that they are also educated about Listeria.

The campaign must also be extended to restaurants and pension paypoints where food is being sold,” said IFP KZN Provincial Spokesperson on Health, Mrs Ncamisile Nkwanyana MPL.

“Infectious diseases pose a considerable threat to human health and place an enormous economic burden on health care systems. The research shows that even a simple public awareness campaign can have a positive effect,” concluded Mrs Nkwanyana.

The IFP says rural people must be educated about Listeria outbreak.
